The Law Society of the Northern Provinces operates a First Interview Scheme to make attorneys' services more readily available to members of the public. Under the scheme, an attorney will carry out an initial interview with any member of the public at no charge for the first half hour.

THE FOLLOWING RULES APPLY TO THE SCHEME

The First Interview Scheme was set up to assist those members of the public who normally would not make use of the services of an attorney, or who may hesitate to consult an attorney for fear of the possible high fees resulting from the services.

The purpose of the initial interview is for the attorney to advise you whether you have a legitimate case in a specific matter or not, that is legal advice or information with regards to the merits of the case. Only the first interview is free of charge. Any legal steps which may then be initially taken, or any further consultations arising from the interview are payable at the normal tariff, which must be agreed on with the attorney.

Members of the public are invited to contact the Law Society of the Northern Provinces should they wish to make use of the scheme. He/she will be supplied in writing with the name and address of an attorney who has declared himself willing to participate in the scheme. At the same time the Law Society will advise the attorney in writing that the member of the public has been referred to him. Referrals are made to attorneys on a rotation basis.
